5 Ways To Maintain Healthy Skin As You Age

Did you know? November is national healthy skin month. But it’s something you can “celebrate” year-round, regardless of your age. 

Our skin ages with us and it’s easy to take our body’s largest organ for granted for all that it does for us on a daily basis. For example, did you know that our skin helps us regulate our body temperature? It also helps us absorb and use vitamin D from the sun. 

Your skin renews itself every 28 days and the average person has over 300 million skin cells at any given time. Your skin, like other organs in your body, is negatively affected by stress and it can show up in the form of acne, wrinkles, redness, rashes, dryness, or other concerns. 

Not to mention the obvious: it protects our tissues and organs from trauma, bacteria, and the elements. 

That’s why it’s so important to take care of our skin, just as we do any other organ in our body. As we age, skin concerns can begin to become more apparent. It’s common to develop fine lines and wrinkles (and this is completely natural), but you’ll want to keep up a vigilant routine to keep your skin nourished and radiant. 

Some common skin concerns that are associated with aging are:

  • Dry, itchy skin
  • Bruises that take longer to heal
  • Age spots
  • Skin tags
  • Decreased elasticity
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • More delicate skin that takes longer to heal from minor abrasions
  • Skin cancer

The good news? Many of these concerns are completely preventable with the help of a great (and consistent) routine. 

To keep your skin radiant, adopt these healthy habits:

  1. Eat well. A balanced diet goes a long with in nourishing your body (and therefore, your skin) and providing the essential vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that keep you glowing. 
  2. Guzzle water. Staying hydrated is a wonderful way to provide your skin with the hydration it needs to stay healthy and glowing. Pro tip: drink natural spring water or mineral water when you can! Water is always “looking” for minerals. If it’s purified so that the minerals are removed, the purified water is going to search for and pull the minerals from your body instead. Be aware of how much purified water you’re consuming and opt for mineral water and natural spring water whenever possible. Good water flushes out toxins and helps keep skin clear and hydrated.
  3. Begin a daily routine for dry skin. Use moisturizing soaps and lotions, don’t wash excessively, and wash with the coolest water temperature that is comfortable to you. Use a humidifier throughout the year, but especially in the dry, cold winter months. 
  4. Get intentional with sun exposure. Soaking in the sun sans sunscreen is great for absorbing and maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D. However, you should be intentional about exposure and only plan to be unprotected in the sun for short periods throughout the day. Otherwise, stick to the shade, wear protective clothing, hats, or a good mineral sunscreen. Avoid sun damage as much as possible. 
  5. Take time for skincare daily. Develop a healthy cleansing, treatment, and moisturizing routine each day to keep skin fresh, clear, and hydrated consistently. Enjoy occasional treats like facials, saunas, and spa days that will not only pamper and nourish your skin, but help you diminish skin-harming stress.
